READY TO ROCK SYDNEY! Primary and high school students from all across New South Wales are in final preparations for the 2012 Rock Eisteddfod Challenge® and J Rock™.

The changeover of sports seasons especially from winter to summer sports is always an expensive time of year for me. Why?

Gone are the days when parents, especially the stay at home parents & carers, just couldn't wait for 9am to get the kids to school and have some peace. It appears lots of us are happy to keep our kids at home with us a lot these days.This also extends to extracurricular kids activities. Kids are joining sports clubs and sports teams and then not really committing themselves to their chosen kids activities.

For years sports scientists have focused on physical tests to try and identify exceptional athletes. Of course there is always genetics. If our kids are lucky enough to come from a long lineage of great sportsmen then we anticipate that they will have a head start on the playing fields.

Since when did kids get so fussy about parties? It use to be - you and your mates would have a play a cake and a few treats. Everyone was super happy and excited to be at the party and a wonderful time was had by all.

It's that time of year again. Most kids and families have someone off school or work as they are sick. We all know that our kids try to convince us they are sick - just so they can sit at home in front of the TV. But, how do we really know should they go to school or participate in their weekly kids activities?

These events are unique and exciting opportunities for schools to take part in a dance, drama and design spectacular where the students are the stars. Eye popping dance routines, dazzling costumes and hi-energy performances guaranteed! Hanging out with your mates as a kid is always fun. Although as a parent one of the things that drives me nuts is my kids being with their mates and just wanting to watch television or play some silly computer games. What is the point of being with your friends if you are just going to stare at a square box the whole time?

Do your kids get any exercise at school? It use to be the case as kids we run like crazy around at recess and lunch time boys and girls alike. Playing whatever was the "in game". Soccer, rounder's, softball, tag and its many variations, handball, skipping - it seemed anything really as long as us kids could run, play and have fun with our mates.

Have you ever been on the sideline of a sporting game or kids activity and been very embarrassed by parents behavior? I am sure you like I have witnessed many instances where a parent is just that bit to competitive or aggressive on the sideline. Maybe ridiculing a small kiddy for not getting that goal.

For me it's that time of year again........Party time. I don't mean for me with lots of presents and luxury beauty appointments . No, it's the kids birthdays and so party season is with us again. Try as I might to dissuade my kids from having a birthday party this year!

National families week this year will be held from Tuesday 15th May to Monday 21st May 2012. These dates coincide with the UN International Day of Families on Tuesday 15th May.
