Kid’s activities needed for fitness

Sitting is not Kids play! Recent studies have stated that sitting is not what kids are supposed to be doing. It is not good for their health.

What a shock some of you may even be surprised. Personally, I cannot even believe we need a study to tell us that kids are supposed to run around, play with their mates, and have lots of fun and exercise.  We all should know by now that kids need to be active. If they are not then watch out. Not only will they suffer from lots of health issues, but you will also see their behaviour deteriorate. Therefore, for your kids physical health and your mental health – get the kids into some exercise and running around.

The Australian government’s Department of Health's guidelines and recommendations are as follows:

Physical Activity Recommendations for 5-12 year olds.

A combination of moderate and vigorous activities for at least 60 minutes a day is recommended by this study released by JAMA.

Examples of moderate activities are a brisk walk, a bike ride or any sort of active play.

Activities that are more vigorous will make kids “huff and puff” and include organised sports such as football and netball, as well as activities such as ballet, running and swimming laps. Children typically accumulate activity in intermittent bursts ranging from a few seconds to several minutes, so any sort of active play will usually include some vigorous activity.

Most importantly, kids need the opportunity to participate in a variety of kids activities that are fun and suit their interests, skills and abilities. Variety will also offer your child a range of health benefits, experiences and challenges.

Children shouldn't spend more than two hours a day using electronic media for entertainment (eg computer games, TV, internet), particularly during daylight hours.

Kids get out, run around at lunchtime at school. Play handball at recess. After school try it, for once forget the TV and computers just go outside and play. When you are called in for dinner you will see how much better you feel compared to just sitting around and staring at a box.

The winter sports season is just around the corner. If you haven’t already done so, then register for a winter sport. It’s a great way to get and keep fit and have lots of fun.
